THE FRIENDS CHURCH
The Religious Society of Friends is one of the oldest denominations in America, with the first “Quakers” arriving in 1656. The Friends movement began in England in 1647 under the preaching and leadership of George Fox, who emphasized faith in Christ alone as necessary for salvation. The revival spread quickly and today people of all races and many nationalities are members of our family. We have been pioneers in missions, in providing quality education for children, in prison reform, in race relations and in non-violence. Friends today are moving in many directions to reach this world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our church is one of over 70 churches in Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas that comprise Evangelical Friends Church - Mid-America Yearly Meeting, headquartered in Wichita. We are also a part of the network of Evangelical Friends International, which encompasses the entire globe.
The Friends Church of Hutchinson began as cottage prayer meetings in homes of individuals who wanted to have a Friends Church in Hutchinson. When they outgrew the homes, the YMCA was rented for worship meetings. The church was officially organized in 1956, and the first building was built in 1957. In 1972 a new sanctuary was built onto the existing facility, which was remodeled to make more classroom space and a larger fellowship hall. We have plans to add a multi-purpose building onto the north side of our sanctuary.
We endeavor to offer a variety of spiritual, educational and social opportunities for our members and friends and having been a witness for Christ all these years, we pray that our church will continue to present the Good News of Jesus to men and women and move them to serve Him as their Lord and Savior.
